Maternal-Fetal Medicine (or perinatology) is a unique specialty of obstetrics that involves the diagnosis, evaluation and management of problems that may affect a mother or her unborn child. Diagnostic Services Offered

Expectant mothers want to give their babies the very best possible start in life. For this reason, we offer:

  • Complete ultrasound - detailed evaluation of fetal anatomy, growth and amniotic fluid in a state of the art facility with the most advanced technology and highly skilled sonographers, specialists in maternal fetal ultrasound.
  • First trimester screening - a combination of ultrasound and blood testing from the mother to identify fetal chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Cell-free Fetal DNA Screening - prenatal, non-invasive blood test to assess the risk of fetal chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Fetal Echocardiography - detailed ultrasound imaging of the heart and its major vessels
  • Amniocentesis - procedure to obtain amniotic fluid that can be used for diagnosis of genetic disorders, analysis of fetal infection, or determination of fetal lung maturity.

  • Fetal interventions and fetal surgery, including PUBS (percutaneous umbilical blood sampling), twin-to-twin transfusion ablation, aminoinfusions and aminoreductions, performed in state-of-the-art operating facilities.

MEET OUR PHYSICIANS

Timothy L. Bennet, MD, FACOG

Dr. Bennet is Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology -- Maternal & Fetal Medicine at UMKC School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed a residency at the Indiana University Hospitals Department of Gynecology and Obsterics in Indianapolis, and a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at Wake Forest University Medical Center. He is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics.

Dev Maulik, MD, Ph.D.

Dr Maulik is the Chair of TMC’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chair of the Department of Maternal and Fetal Medicine at the Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH). He is board-certified in Maternal and Fetal Medicine as well as Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in London, UK. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York, after having received his MBBS from the Medical College at the University of Calcutta, India. He completed residencies at Calcutta Medical College and Charing Cross Hospital Medical School at the University of London and a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Rochester. He received a Ph.D from the University of London. Dr. Maulik is fluent in English and Bengali.

Devika Maulik, MD

Dr. Devika Maulik is board-certified in Maternal and Fetal Medicine and in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UMKC School of Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree at Wellesley College and her medical degree at Cornell University. She completed an internship at Sloane Hospital for Women, part of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Hospital in Los Angeles, and a Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship at the Fetal Health Center in Children’s Mercy Hospital.

David C. Mundy, MD

Dr. David Mundy is Section Chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Maternal & Fetal Medicine at TMC/ UMKC School of Medicine, where he is also Medical Director of the Department of Obstetrical Ultrasound. He is board-certified in Maternal and Fetal Medicine as well as Obstetrics and Gynecology. He received his undergraduate degree at Stanford University and his medical degree at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC. He completed an internship and residency at Emory University and Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, and a fellowship in in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.

Gustavo Vilchez, M.D.

Dr. Vilchez is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and board-eligible in Maternal & Fetal Medicine. He received his medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru and completed a residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UMKC. He is an Assistant Professor in the Maternal Fetal Medicine section of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UMKC School of Medicine.

Emanuel J. Vlastos, MD, FACOG, FAAFP

Dr. Vlastos is Medical Director of Fetal Therapy at the Children’s Mercy Hospital and an important member of TMC’s High-Risk Pregnancy Team, seeing patients and performing surgery at both CMH and TMC  to increase the likelihood of survival of unborn babies. He is board-certified in Maternal and Fetal Medicine as well as Obstetrics and Gynecology. He received his medical degree at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and completed a residency in Family Practice at the University of Wyoming, followed by a residency in in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Regions Hospital, affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School, and a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Washington University.  Dr. Vlastos is an associate professor, and medical director of Fetal Therapy at UMKC School of Medicine.
